The leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council visited Goole town centre recently to see the proposals outlined in the Goole Town Deal. Councillor Jonathan Owen was accompanied by Councillor Jane Evison, portfolio holder for economic development and tourism and the council's elected representative on the Goole Town Deal Board.
Goole's ambitious Town Investment Plan focusses on town centre regeneration and economic growth, ten proposals were put forward to secure the £25 million Town Deal funding from central Government.
"The scale of investment on Goole 36 is outstanding and providing a huge boost to Goole as a Town of regional significance delivering economic growth," said Cllr Owen. "However, we all recognise the same cannot be said for the town centre and so there is much to address. Reassuringly, the Department for Levelling Up, Homes and Communities recognised this too by offering the £25 million Town Deal funding to deliver the Town Investment Plan produced and submitted by the Goole Town Deal Board with East Riding of Yorkshire Council's full support and endorsement.'
The Town Deal will operate until 2026, a significant year for Goole when the town will celebrate its bicentenary. Priority has been given to focussing efforts on the town centre to uplift the spaces and buildings and attract new operators.
Councillor Jane Evison was keen to show some initial work that had taken place at Goole Market Hall, making it a blank canvas ready to create a new venue. By stripping out the old market stall platforms and some preliminary work to the roof and services, it is to trial a variety of uses.
Goole Ward Councillor David Jeffreys joined the visitors in the market hall and spoke highly of the Victoria Pleasure Ground project to upgrade and modernise the grounds facilities.
Concluding the visit to Goole, Councillor Evison said: "It is not difficult to recognise the difference the Town Deal will make to Goole and to our residents. It is really important that organisations collaborate and resource to the best of their ability in a fully focussed and concentrated effort. I'm really grateful the leader of the council found time in a busy period of the year to visit Goole to find out more about the proposals and I believe this again goes to demonstrate our commitment to Goole and our commitment to fulfilling the promises of the Goole Town Deal."
