Council submits planning application for proposal to build new crematorium

Following an extensive public engagement exercise this summer, East Riding of Yorkshire Council has submitted a full planning application for a proposal to build a new crematorium in Holderness.

The proposed site of the crematorium, off Lelley Road, near Preston, will provide a much-needed facility in the local area and will also support the economy through the creation of jobs and through trade for related businesses.

The new crematorium would create a site with an environmentally-conscious design and green building principles and will offer people a fitting and sensitive place to commemorate their loved ones, with planned features including a new woodland, a memory walk and other areas for remembrance and celebration.

Councillor Richard Burton, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: "Our extensive research and community consultation has confirmed that the need for a new crematorium in the area is very apparent; a significant majority of respondents to our consultation are in favour of the development of a facility in Holderness because it will reduce the amount of distance and time they need to travel and provide the opportunity for their loved ones to be laid to rest closer to where they live."

East Riding of Yorkshire Council was keen to involve the local community in the pre-planning stages of the proposal so that local people would appreciate how much focus is being put into creating a much-needed facility with a sense of place at its heart.

The council has carried out extensive pre-planning consultation with stakeholders across a range of media designed to address the restrictions posed by the COVID-19 pandemic on public engagement, to enable maximum reach.

The feedback from the consultation was essential and has influenced changes to the design which has now been submitted within the planning application.
